The United States began to buy Russian nuclear fuel (TVEL company Rosatom signed the first contract for fuel for US nuclear power plants)

TVEL Fuel Company signed an agreement with one of the nuclear power plant operators in the United States the first contract for the pilot operation of Russian nuclear fuel “TVS-Kvadrat”, said the state corporation “Rosatom”.

Earlier, in May, TVEL and American company GNF-A signed an agreement on joint work on the withdrawal of Russian nuclear fuel “TVS-Kvadrat” on the fuel market for US nuclear power plants. It was reported that the first fuel assemblies “TVS-Kvadrat” can be downloaded in 2018 in a US reactor nuclear power plant.

As part of the agreement on Monday held a meeting of representatives of GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy Company (GEH) and GNF-A with the leadership of Rosatom and TVEL.

The talks were attended by Director General of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko, his first deputy - director of the Bloc of Development and International Business Kirill Komarov, the president of TVEL Yuri Olenin, President and CEO of GEH Jay Thomas Vaylmen and CEO for the production of GNF-A Amir Wexler.

Partners discussed a number of issues relating to the development of cooperation in the nuclear industry and the supply of Russian nuclear fuel to the market of Western design reactors PWR. This, in particular, discussed prospects of joint work TVEL and company GNF-A licensing “TVS-Kvadrat”, as well as obtaining the necessary permits for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of the USA for the commercial supply of fuel for the purpose of operating in the US nuclear power reactors.

“We believe in this project. We know how to make fuel” TVS-Kvadrat “, it is successfully used in Western Europe, nuclear power plants, that is, we go to the US market not with empty hands. It is important that, in collaboration with GE-Hitachi we move from words to the case, and has already signed a contract for the supply of an experimental batch of TVEL fuel into the reactor in the United States, “- said Kiriyenko, whose words are quoted in the report.

The head of Rosatom said that “we appreciate the importance of the alliance created and ready to make the most of knowledge and skills to successfully complete the licensing process in the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.”

“We are pleased to see the progress in the work of the alliance TVEL and GNF-A, which is aimed at increasing the fuel of choice for operators of light-water reactors in the US This partnership offers our clients access to deep technical knowledge, expertise and experience of these two companies.” - Said Vaylmen.

As part of a consortium of GNF-A will provide project management in the US, will focus on licensing and quality assurance, as well as to provide engineering services. TVEL will provide expertise in the design of fuel “TVS-Kvadrat”, will provide technical support and carry out the fabrication of the first batches of assemblies for pilot production programs at its facilities. Subsequent assemblies for commercial fuel supplies in the United States will jointly produced at the plant GNF-A in Wilmington (North Carolina, United States).
