Japan: “Sanctions? Business expensive”

It is reported that Russia is preparing for a certain energy deal with Japan, the world’s largest importer of natural gas. Japan has confirmed the date of the visit to the leader of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin this fall. However, no details of a possible transaction is not given. Will it do? Can break negotiations in connection with the sanctions?

Questions on this topic raises a lot. How robust our trade relations with Japan today? What joint projects have in the future? How could affect mutual sanctions on economic relations between our countries?

First, some numbers. According to the Russian Federal Customs Service, in January-March 2014 Japan has been one of the major trading partners of Russia-CIS countries, ranking on this indicator sixth place. Trade with Japan for the period totaled $ 6.6 billion (a decrease of 15 percent compared to the first quarter 2013). At the same time the United States in terms of trade with Russia occupied the seventh place with an exponent of 6.4 billion.

And by the end of 2013, Japan came in seventh place in the list of Russia’s trading partners, ahead of the United States, Turkey and Italy. According to the State Statistics Committee, the trade turnover of Russia with Japan then was 33.2 billion, or 3.9 percent of the total foreign trade of Russia.
